Historical Walk

The historical walk is taken from Visions of the Plains - A History of Burren Junction and Distrit 2nd edition updated to include events of 1988-2004 by Judy Field.

QR Code for this page will be on main signage with map and corresponding numbers from the book at the Cafe on Waterloo, Swimming Pool, Post Office, Junction City Hotel and Burren Bore Baths, Coronation Park

Points of interest will be numbered as per the map and the bikes will be used to display numbers and those blocks with no buildings and no bikes will have a peg displaying the number.

The QR Code for this page will also be displayed at the folling points through out the community:  Police Station, Public School, Sports Complex, School of Arts Hall  (where free wifi will be available password Burren2386), Cnr Houlahan and Slck-Smith Streets.

NUMBERED SITES

1.   Cnr Corunna Street and Slack-smith Street was William Houlahan town and property owner (Trena has photo) Now the Junction City Hotel.

2.   White Bros Garage burnt down not long after it was built.

3.   George Smith’s Commercial Hotel

4.   Railway (first Hotel in Burren) later called the Rabbit Warren because so many families lived in it at one time.

5.   Billiard Room owned by Mr Whitton

6.   Bakers Shop (Where brandy snaps sold for one penny) these shops all burnt I one go about 1922.

7.   Butchers shop owned by Bill Hindes (later sold to Bill Murphy)

8.   Saddlers Shop owned by Mr Pollock who was also a boot maker

9.   Blacksmith’s Shop where Charlie Thompson as the proprietor.

10.  Fred Newland and Bill Finlans wagon camp.
